Less but Better in 2023

nuggetsoflearning • January 10, 2023

I am currently reading Greg McKeown book Essentialism, and the ethos of the book is the disciplined pursuit of less.

Before 2022 came to a close I sent my clients a review of the year and a way to look forward to the next. The main basis of this exercise is “what are you going to say yes to…?” and “what are you going to say no to…?” With Mckeown’s advice of less but better you can really drill down on your list.

  • For example if you said yes to more work, be discerning is it the right work with the mantra of less but better, don’t just chase the revenue source the right clients.
  • If you said no to lunch at your desk, ensure that you have better lunches which need to be eaten at a table! Less lunches at your office means going out mor, again Less but Better.
  • New Year and the old mantra New Me – have you said yes to being healthy, but possibly said that in 2022. However tackle it now with the Less but Better – don’t be too bold with your changes. Still drink alcohol but give yourself 4 days free. If you said yes to running, don’t run everyday set a target of twice a week.
  • If you said no to eating badly don’t be too hard on yourself, just remember the Less but Better…!
  • More research and reading is a great thing to say yes to, but again if you are too ambitious with the goal it can become a chore as the goal is too overwhelming. Read and research for 30 minutes everyday “Less but better”
  • Saying yes to seeing your children mid term of University – go and see them for lunch don’t expect them to come back for a whole weekend. Being with them one on one and not at home is fantastic (less time but better).
  • Watching too much TV could be something you said no to, but just be disciplined in the pursuit of less, know why you put the TV on and know what you want to watch, but also be prepared to hit the off button.
  • Say yes to more business development, but do it a new space and for a shorter time, less but infinitely better.
  • Saying yes to spending more time with friends is great but again know who makes you feel good and know who drains your energy. Keep your circle manageable, less but better.

McKeown uses the example of a wardrobe. If you never organised your clothes and you just carried on buying more and more and never discarding the old you would end up wearing the same clothes. You want to have a tight selection but be able to create variables in your outfit selection. Less but better and on a rotation, regular audit for Spring, Summer and Winter.

Please let me know what you are going to do Less but Better – Happy 2023
